The Nursery

The nursery, at the northern end of Great Salt Bay, is home to our barrel upweller system (for larger seed) and two bottle systems (for our smallest seed).

What’s the primary goal at the nursery? Keep that water flowing. Good flow is how the seed (oyster babies) stay clean and fed, as filter feeders.

In season (May-July or August), the nursery is bustling with farm crew grading seed by hand (yes, by hand), “stirring” upwellers, cleaning bottles, averting crises, and observing (with absolute admiration) as the oysters double or triple in size.
